A majority of hip disorders that are treated with surgery in adults in the UK are caused by osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis.

The hips are, without a doubt, one of the most significant joints in the body. Your hips allow you to walk, run, and jump while supporting your weight and when they aren’t operating correctly, they have an enormous impact on your quality of life.

Arthritis, compressed nerves, degenerative disease, and sports injuries are just a few of the reasons why people may experience hip problems. Anyone can get them, regardless of age.

YOUR HIP

Your hip is a ball-and-socket joint, which means that it allows for movement in numerous directions. The femur (thighbone) meets the pelvis at either end of the hip. On one end, the femur forms a ball-shaped head concentrated with cartilage that fits into a cuplike structure inside your pelvis called the acetabulum. In a healthy hip, the ball turns freely inside this cup, allowing for a full range of motion without pain or discomfort.

SUFFERING FROM HIP PAIN?

The first step in your treatment journey is scheduling an appointment. If you have private insurance or are self-funding you can contact me to book a consultation. I currently have a weekly clinic at the Spire and Thames Valley Hospital in Wexham. Treatments can vary from outpatient injections to total joint replacement so a full thorough consultation is the first step in your diagnosis.

The following are the steps I take during your consultation

  • Carefully take a full history of the onset, course, duration of your pain as well as aggrevating factors.
  • Examination of your hip, spine, knee, ankle and foot (In order to establish whether the pain originates from any other joint and has a knock on effect on your hip).
  • Perform imaging scans as required in order to confirm the diagnosis and dertermine its severity.
  • Woke out a management plan to address your pain (Most hip patients don’t require surgery and can be treated by conservative means).
  • You will have full access to me if things aren’t going to plan or become worse at any point in the future.
  • If you need surgery, you will get a pre assessment appointment in which you will have a check up on your heart, lungs and bloods to ensure no underlying pathology prevents you from having a successful outcome.

CAUSES OF HIP PAIN

Problems that may arise in your hip can necessitate surgery to repair specifically if it is an acute injury or if there are too many structural problems with the bones and cartilage.

Hip pain can be due to:

  • Injury
  • Arthritis (wear and tear)
  • Developmental issues like dysplasia (abnormal development)
  • Malformation (abnormality of structure)
  • Infection
  • Tumors

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR HIP PAIN

Your treatment may include both surgical and non-surgical options, depending on your condition. X-rays, MRI scans and blood tests may be required to properly diagnose and treat your hip pain.

HIP PROCEDURES THAT CAN HELP

  • Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) which is the surgical treatment for fractures.
  • Hip replacement surgery (also known as arthroplasty) is a procedure that puts new parts in the injured or diseased joint to treat the pain.
  • Hip revision surgeries are done when there is something wrong with the current implant such as loosening, breakage or infection.
  • Hip preservation surgeries like hip arthroscopy and core decompression help prevent disease progression.
